About The Harrowing Tales of La Corriveau
The Harrowing Tales of La Corriveau is a graphic novel retelling of the legend and history of Marie-Josephte Corriveau, a Quebecois woman whom the English executed in 1763 for the murder of her second husband. Following her death, Corriveau was hanged from a tree outside of Quebec City in an iron cage. In the centuries that followed, her story was transformed. She became a caged witch who haunted lone travellers, a reviled murderess, and a victim of circumstance. Corriveau was executed at a crucial point in North American history—the British victory over the French in the Seven Years War. Her ‘trial’ was driven by the British need to demonstrate their authority. The Harrowing Tales of La Corriveau places competing stories of colonialism, control, and absurdity into conversation in a surprising and poignant way.
